What is Gemini Advanced?

Gemini Advanced introduces the Ultra 1.0 model, which is Google's largest and reportedly most capable AI model yet.

Highlights

  • Gemini Advanced is said to excel in tasks such as coding, logical reasoning, and creative collaboration.
  • Gemini Advanced is designed to provide more detailed conversations and better understand context from previous prompts, making it highly effective for tutoring, coding, and content generation.

How to access Gemini Advanced

Gemini Advanced is available through a new Google One Premium AI Plan, costing $19.99 per month.

  • This plan includes the best of Google's AI features, along with 2TB of storage.
  • The new Gemini models, including the less advanced Pro 1.0 version, are also being integrated into Google's Workspace and Cloud products, enhancing tools like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Google Cloud with AI capabilities.
  • Note that Gemini Advanced with Ultra 1.0 model is only available in English at this time

In terms of model performance, as Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google & Alphabet highlights:

The largest model Ultra 1.0 is the first to outperform human experts on MMLU (massive multitask language understanding), which uses a combination of 57 subjects — including math, physics, history, law, medicine and ethics — to test knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

Will Gemini save Google?

With the $20 monthly fee of Gemini Advanced, it's clear they're going directly after OpenAI and GPT-4 which charges the exact same price. While Google has had a rocky start with chatbot launches in the past, reportedly faking their last demo video, we'll have to see if this new model makes up for those past missteps.

Of course, as they're integrating the model across many of their Cloud and Workspace services, even if they don't win over many consumers from ChatGPT, it will be interesting to see if they can win the race of integrating AI into businesses. As Sundar highlights:

AI is also now central to two businesses that have grown rapidly in recent years: our Cloud and Workspace services and our popular subscription service Google One, which is just about to cross 100 million subscribers.

ChatGPT also rolled out their enterprise and team plans recently, so let's hope they respond to the release of Gemini Advanced with more details about GPT-5...
